Zenchu (part 2)

My daughter's off to Nagano. She left at five p.m.
I sharpened these skates for her this morning. They're so sharp I could shave with them.

We bought this bag to carry my daughter's skates and helmet. With such a cute bag she'll be mistaken for a figure skater.

Zenchu

This article is from Tuesday's Chunichi Newspaper. My daughter and four other junior high school students are at the City Hall to meet the chairman of the Board of Education. They will represent Shizuoka at the National Junior High School Winter Sports Competitions held this weekend. My daughter will compete in the 500 m and 1000 m speed skating races held in Nagano. She's packing her bags right now.

Birthday (part two)

That evening we went to Shaburaku for shabu-shabu and ice-cream. With two big meals in one day we put on a lot of weight.

Birthday (part one)

Yesterday was my wife's birthday. Her mother treated us to lunch at D.C. Cafe. They have a nice buffet.

Hattasan Temple

On Sunday we went to Hattasan Temple. We go at the beginning of every year. This was my 19th visit. We didn't think it would be so crowded one full week into the New Year. But we had a 40 minute wait to get parked. After praying at the temple (and watching a short monkey show held in front of the temple!) we bought five packs of these delicious "dango". We ate most of them before heading home.

Akiha Shrine

On January first, my family visited Akiha Shrine. I wasn't in the mood for the large crowds that gather at other shrines. We had a long, winding drive up the mountain side. But the view from the top was spectacular.

Speed Skating

Yesterday we went to the fifth annual Shizuoka Prefecture speed skating competition held at the Seiko Oval in Fujikyu Highland. We were pleased with our kids' results and I was glad it was mild and not at all windy.

Here is my oldest son. He always has such a serious expression.

That evening we had dinner at Chinchilla.

Thanks, Mr.Saito, for the nice poster.

Santa Came!

Our youngest son was concerned that our dog might keep Santa from entering our house. The kids were delighted to see that Santa made it here. He brought some high tech toys for the boys and clothes for my daughter. He also ate the chocolates and drank the milk we put out for him. My sons say that proves he was here!

Christmas decorations

Every year we have a small Christmas party for our students. And every year they make a different decoration. This time it was a "scratch and design your own snowflake". The kids loved them and wanted to make more.

Christmas tree lights

These are the only Christmas lights we're putting up this year. With the unfortunate events that happened in March we didn't want to celebrate too much.

My sons helped put up the Christmas tree a few days ago. This is one task they don't mind doing.

Yamabiko Cup

On Sunday my family went to Nagano to compete in the Yamabiko Cup. We left Hamamatsu before 2 am and arrived around 5:30. We were lucky to have mild weather but it was rather windy.

My youngest son came in third for the grade two boy's 500 meter race.

My older son didn't win a medal but we were happy with his time and form.

We had a long drive home that evening.

Nagashima Spa Land

On Wednesday we went to Nagashima Spa Land. It was chilly because it was cloudy and a little rainy all day. But bad weather meant few people and short lines. We had fun and could enjoy ride after ride. But I had a mild case of motion sickness for the next 24 hours.

Kamakura Pasta

Today we had lunch at Kamakura Pasta on Sumiyoshi Bypass. Everything was delicious and the service was great. I had "nama" ham, spinach, and cream cheese spaghetti and a small, crispy pizza with tuna and garlic topping.

Flowers

I enjoy taking care of flowers and always keep lots in front of our house. I feel lucky to be able to grow flowers throughout the year. I planted these for winter. I'm happy when the people walking by compliment my flowers. But I'm not so happy when they say, "Your wife does a good job!"

Marshmallows

My kids made these marshmallows last week. They were good but they didn't taste like regular ones. I like mine toasted.

Junior Eiken Test

This morning we held the junior eiken test at our school.
We hold this test twice a year. About 20 kids tried it this time. I was happy to see the younger children try so hard.

Halloween

On Friday we started our annual Halloween parties. It's an event the kids love. Their faces light up when they see the decorations.

Each child makes one of these jack-o'-lanterns.

This popular lift-the-flap book explains what kids do on Halloween.

Festival

Here are some photos from a festival held on Sunday at the Garden Park. We had planned to stay home but it was perfect weather for being outside. My sons enjoyed the soccer challenge. For ¥100 they had two chances to kick a soccer ball through one of the holes. They got a small bag of chips for every 10 points they scored.

This satsumaimo pudding was delicious!

Lunch

Today we had lunch at "Washokudokuro Atsumi" in Takaoka Higashi. The food was great and the price was reasonable. It's a very popular restaurant. You should reserve a table before you go.
